Blessing of the Fleet 2010

On the 24 October the annual Blessing of the Fleet was conducted on the St Helens Wharf by the Rev Alexander Withers. Approximately one hundred supporters and local community members attended to pay homage to our life around the sea. Rev Withers blessed the fishing fleet, crews, Marine Police and the local marine rescue unit.

Many took advantage of the opportunity to jump aboard the Marine Rescue, Tasmanian Police and Troy Rainbird (Nifty II ) vessels for a trip down the bay after the service.

The RV Larapuna (centre console 4.5 metre rigid inflatable) has arrived and is aboard the Freycinet ready to go. Our crew have tested her out on the barway and we are very happy with her performance.

St Helens Marine Rescue wishes to thank:

  • Gemini for discounting the hull.
  • Ashley Dunne from Inflatable Boats Tasmania, who went out of his way to assist us.
  • Hadley and his crew at Deegan Marine, who have once again supported us with fitting out and another great Evinrude outboard.
  • The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Solas Fund provided $20,000 towards the cost of RV Larapuna. Thank you to Mark Woolf and Matt Allen with whom we corresponded.

We are extemely pleased to be able to provide our Break O’Day Community with more support for their safety on the water.

Rebecca White, MP for Lyons, visited St Helens Marine Rescue on 12 August 2010.

Ms White discussed operational procedures, training activities, and the ongoing commitment of the Association. She was shown the Association’s operational statistics and given a guide tour of the base and our vessels. Ms White acknowledged the contribution of the Association to marine safety.

The Association is hopeful that the outcome of the visit will bring more government funding to support our operations.
